Crazy in the Coconaut: Frontier Psychiatrist

Ahead of being released from the lab to roam the edges of the universe in our spaceship, we, the kvasmonauts, were required to meet with a so-called “frontier psychiatrist”. This was the same doctor who had discovered and categorized the side-effects of our genetic mutations as follows:

1: An uncontrollable desire to seek adventure

2: A predisposition toward enjoying music during said adventures and

3: An unusually strong preference for drinking a bubbly-fermented beverage called “Kvas”

It was important for the intentions of our travels to be assessed and documented for the space-community. Here is an excerpt from our interview:

“…We zoom through the final frontier with no particular destination in mind, knowing that we will never truly ‘arrive’. Ours is an expedition of pure adventure and exploration, where each experiment and each experience just points us ahead to the next. What’s the point? Well, the point is to satisfy a craving for creating and, in the process, to be schooled in one of the great lessons of life - every experience is an opportunity to deepen our capacity to love and to grow. Our capacity to love ourselves, one-another, the space we inhabit, and the way things work. And our capacity to grow our knowledge, our understanding of things, and our positive contribution to that which we love. Around every corner, silly adventure, outrageous ingredient and so on, lies an opportunity for these depths of love and growth. We’ll be trading the products of our explorations in the form of adventurous brews. Our hope is that our creations will inspire the same thirst for adventure, excitement, and depth in anyone who might have a taste.”

With that, our frontier psychiatrist dismissed us from the session with a prescription of one serving of our own “crazy in the coconaut” brew when the urge for adventure strikes. It’s not an antidote, the doctor reassures us, it’s fuel.

*A note from Travis and Jess: We consider “Crazy in the Coconaut” to be the reason we decided to start brewing beer in the first place. It was Travis’ dream to make a West Coast style hazy IPA with an unusual coconut twist. Our made-up recipe includes raw coconut flakes which are introduced together with the hops both during the final boil of the wort and during dry hopping. The result is a tropical, creamy, nutty, hazy IPA, the likes of which we have never tasted before. The recipe worked on our first try and has become our long-standing favorite ever since.
